Centrifugal Blower

A centrifugal blower is a machine used for moving air and gases for general ventilation, extraction from production processes, fume hoods, smoke removal, and more.

How does a centrifugal fan work?
Every blower has an impeller made of 4-12 welded blades. The impeller rotates at a fixed speed determined by the motor and the drive connected to it (explanation of blower drive types is provided below).

Centrifugal blowers consist of an electric motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. At the motor shaft, the impeller can either be directly coupled to the motor (this is called a direct-drive blower) or connected via a belt wheel that changes the rotation speed.

A centrifugal blower is chosen (instead of an axial fan) when it is necessary to move air or gases at pressure drops ranging from 20-2000 mmH₂O, especially when you do not want the air stream to pass through the motor (in axial fans, the air always passes through the motor).

Centrifugal blowers are designed to operate 24/7 and often serve as a central hub in production processes. Therefore, it is important to require the blower manufacturer to build it in a heavy-duty welded industrial structure using thick, high-quality sheet metal.
A simple example illustrating the importance of blower quality is in a restaurant: if the blower stops working, no extraction occurs through the hoods, and all smoke generated in the kitchen spreads into the dining area, affecting the customers.
When the blower is selected at the correct operating point in terms of efficiency and is controlled using a flow meter and a frequency converter, it can be extremely efficient and powerful, based on centrifugal force - sucking air from the installed space and expelling it outside. These advantages make it highly popular in the food industry and other industrial sectors.
Centrifugal blowers are used for extracting hot air, smoke, and odors. They can be found in restaurants, cafés, industrial kitchens, and various factories, primarily in food production, but also in other industrial applications.

Advantages of a Centrifugal Blower

Besides the fact that a centrifugal blower extracts hot air, odors, and smoke, making it suitable for a wide variety of businesses and factories, it offers several additional benefits:

  • Quiet operation - The blower is acoustic, housed in a specialized enclosure, and does not produce noise during operation, allowing installation without disturbing the workspace.
  • Efficiency and power - It is highly efficient both in performance and energy consumption (requires only 40 volts). Additionally, it is a powerful blower that performs reliably over time.
  • Easy installation - The blower can be installed in various locations, typically on the roof, which preserves the building’s façade and makes maintenance straightforward if any issue arises.
  • Industrial-duty blower - Built for heavy industrial use, this blower is designed to operate 24/7, withstand corrosion, and endure continuous mechanical stress over long periods.

How to Choose a Centrifugal Blower

There is a wide range of manufacturers on the market, each with its own specialties and expertise in specific areas. Therefore, it is recommended to first define whether a process-duty blower is required, one that demands very high reliability, and to specify the process parameters the blower must meet. Once these requirements are established, you can consult with a blower manufacturer and select a blower that best suits the specific needs of your process.

Common options when choosing blowers:

  1. Different types of impellers, such as forward-curved blades, backward-curved blades, and radial blades.
  2. Types of drives: belt drive, direct drive, direct drive with clutch.
  3. Various additions, such as inspection openings in the blower body, vibration dampers, diameter transitions at the inlet and outlet, flexible connectors, and seals to prevent gas leakage.
  4. Special construction materials, such as stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316, PP, aluminum, and Corten steel.
  5. Spark protection using non-sparking metals and explosion-proof motors.

To choose the blower you need, it is recommended to hire a professional team to examine the structure and the type of work performed on site. They can help determine which blower is suitable. The selection is based on the building size, type of work, the type of air to pass through the blower, installation location, and other professional parameters.

In addition to the technical specifications, it is recommended to purchase a blower that meets the following basic conditions:

  • Minimum one-year warranty
  • Immediate repair availability if needed
  • Delivery within a few days
  • Professional maintenance team and fast service
